My paintball gun is one that has options to look like a M16. It is a Tippman A-5 with an electric trigger, expansion chamber and a "stiffy" carbon fiber sniper barrel. I may invest in a remote for the gas, but I like how well the gun balances with a tank attached. The only issue with my gun is that the hopper advance is built in and runs off the gas, so you get a few less shots out of a tank, I like this better than the electric external hoppers because it does not stick up off the gun as much, or make as much noise. Also, the A-5 has a straight LOS down the top of the gun where most others have the hopper right in the middle, impeding a good line up down the sight.
Tips and comparisons:
Always wear a facemask and clothing covering your whole body. I use two layers of clothing which is usually a hoody to guard the back of the neck and head in the winter time, or a bandana in the summer, and fatigues as an outer layer year round. This maximizes the bounce effect and keeps the bruise effect to a minimum. When you break a round in the chamber your gun will fire erratically for the next few shots. Some people like to carry a barrel squeegee, in the event that the need to field clean there gun, but I make due without because there is usually not time or adequate cover to allow this
Keep your head down, it is where I take the most hits. A good pair of shoes is a must, just something that you can maneuver in.
Compressed air or C02?
Most rental guns fire compressed air which is good for beginners, or the super advanced, depending on the gun. These guns have a low rate of fire and 1 hopper of paint will usually last a whole round. Some longer scenarios will require the ability to carry paint to reload with. 1 hopper averages 150-200 rounds. A lot of face masks that are rented fog easily, especially when there is high moisture in the air. The best way to avoid this is to bring your own anti-fog or purchase some at the pro shop.
Firing co2 is more accurate than most compressed air, unless you are a pro. My gun can fire at a very high rate of fire (up to 30 rounds per second) and is fully adjustable for tournament use. I have a tool belt that carries about 1000 rounds including a loaded hopper along with an extra co2 tank for long scenarios (Yes, I have fired 1000 rounds in one scenario before when all my teammates got taken out quickly).
These pointers are mostly applicable to outdoor ranges as I have not played indoors for a long time.
