It was all started by pulling up the gross
old carpet and removing all of the staples by hand with needle nose pliers.
The next step was to fill any large cracks and holes with wood putty.
A rectangular electric vibrator sander was then used, making taking off the old finish without removing to much wood a breeze. The use of a hand vibrator sander for getting into all of the corners also works well around heater registers and other hard to get places.
While sweeping and vacuumed between grits of sandpaper, we stepped up in grit size from 80
grit to 240 grit, we achieved a smooth and clean floor.
Before applying our varathane the floor was wiped clean with damp clothes to remove all dust.
Varathane was applied with a wool applicator every 8 hours until we had four coats on.
All said it took me about 42 man hours and $400 in materials. Worth every penny because we enjoy then everyday, and the clean up without leaving behind anything.
